I enjoyed going to dinner with my parents tonight. Olive Garden is always enjoyable, if anything for the salad. But it is also time out with Mom and Dad.

We chit-chatted on a myriad of things, and somehow wandered across old movies and TV shows, and that led me to mention that Cindy Williams of “Laverne and Shirley” fame was in Dean Martin’s last movie, acting as his wife.

That snippet dropped us to talking about Penny Marshall, since she was a Kelly Girl here in Albuquerque at the time that my mom was also working at Kelly Girls. Kelly Girls were outsourced temporary office employees back in the early 60’s when my mom was working there.

I asked Mom how long she had worked there, and we determined she worked there before giving birth out my sister in 1965, and sometime after they came to New Mexico in 61, and after she had worked a few other jobs. We loosely decided she had worked for Kelly Girls for two years.

I learned that my mom early on after being employed there stated that she wanted to do her work in their main office in town, and not be sent out on assignments, because she was new to the city, and didn’t feel comfortable wandering around on streets she was absolutely unfamiliar with. This was after she had an experience of having her butt grabbed by a man while waiting at a bus stop. When she told some people about that experience at work, one woman exclaimed, “Honey, be glad you still have it. When you get to be my age no one wants to grab anything of yours anymore.”

Mom remained in the office and spent much of her time typing up the stenographer copy of a document being produced by a man at Sandia Labs (then, Sandia Corporation). She recalled not knowing much about what his book was on, but she did recall meeting him a time or two, and she had made a comment about hoping she was doing her work well enough. He assured her that if she wasn’t she wouldn’t still be working on his book.

Mom said she had had one job in an office building near uptown, for one day- typing up time cards into a list on sheets of paper. That was the big job that day.

Her talking about working on the book for Mr. Schatz raised my curiosity. Why was this man, and what was he writing about?

A quick Googling brought me here:

which seemed to fit with the description of the man and the work he had my mom typing up in 1963-64.

And we came to suspect one item she was typing on was this project:

    Dinner was interesting and enjoyable.

    About

A web programmer by day, I somehow still spend a lot of time thinking about relationships, God, and the significance of grace and love in daily events. I am old school in the sense that I believe in the reality of sin, and in the need of each human heart for deliverance to the Divine. I am one of those who believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that you can find most answers to life's pressing issues in Him and His Word, the Bible. I ain't perfect, and a lot of the time I ain't good, but by God's grace and kindness, I am forgiven and free.
